Wikipedia describes Jennifer Lynn Lopez as the following:
"Jennifer Lopez is an American singer, actress, dancer, fashion designer, and producer. She has won 135 awards from 324 nominations including three American Music Awards, one BET Award, one Billboard Music Award, ten Billboard Latin Music Awards, and two World Music Awards."
~(yes, that's a lame way of starting this, but THOSE ACCOLADES, Y'ALL)~
Is that not a mouthful? A few years ago Forbes Magazine named Jennifer Lopez the world's most powerful Latino. Throughout her career, she has received countless criticisms about her career choices up to the men she chooses to date. The media glazes over real impactful accomplishments sometimes. Her work with the United Nations as the GLOBAL ADVOCATE FOR GIRLS + WOMEN and her Lopez Family Foundation (which I didn't even know existed!) is news under the radar when these are actions that truly make an impact in our communities. She uses her influence for GOOD. How many celebrities do we know that actually do that?
Jennifer Lopez has shown women in this world that it is okay to want to have everything. We can do everything. We can have everything. She doesn't apologize for her ambition or work ethic. She isn't afraid to tackle the obstacles thrown her way, like being dragged by the media. She has shown so much authenticity & love throughout her career that it's really refreshing to see from someone with so much influence in the entertainment industry.
Here at Girl Blossom, we consider Jennifer a true icon & an exceptional human being.
Not only has she continuously represented Latina women in music, television, AND film for TWENTY YEARS, she has used her power as a "celebrity" to represent and help change the stigma society has placed on women and Latinos. As one of the hardest working Latinas in the entertainment industry, she has successfully tackled various roles. Here are some of the iconic roles & moments that have embraced feminism.
JLo has put out ten albums over the course of her music career. Her music is all about love, worth, and strength. There is no denying that JLo's music has a beautiful vulnerable quality to it. She shares what it's like to love and be loved. She shares that even when you don't feel 100% you need to get out there and kill it! Self-love is important to her because you are not happy, how could you make someone else happy? She's all about being an independent woman. Being self suffiecent and being smart and knowing when to listen to your heart.
If you look at her musical discography, she’s been championing women for nearly two decades, and has been severely underappreciated for it. As early as 1999’s On The 6, Lopez had a succinct and demanding message about womanhood that she’s unrelentingly carried on throughout her career: that female self-sufficiency rules, she deserves a man who supports that, and supports her. in her musical and movie career, J.Lo is disinterested in “poor me” stereotypes of helplessness or scarlet lettering set aside for powerful women. -Kat George
Her movie career has been criticized endlessly, yet the really meaningful roles she's portrayed get sidetracked. Anaconda, Enough, Selena, The Wedding Planner. These are just some examples of strong women she has portrayed in the film industry. They might not be PERFECT female characters, but nonetheless, strong in their own right. Another amazing thing about her film career is that Jennifer Lopez has been the leading lady in most of her films. Not the best friend. Not a quirky cameo. THE LEAD. How many latina women have been a top billed actress in big Hollywood productions? Not many. Even until this day.
Her time on television can be summed up with American Idol and Shades of Blue. She went ahead and added Producer and Executive Producer to her IMDB page. She created World of Dance and helped create Shades of Blue (while starring in it!) What can't she do? What else is there left for her to do? She can't be stopped.
There's so much that we could say about JLo's long and inspiring career. She wears many hats and has been doing it for so long, we don't know how she does it. Her ambition and feminism have truly inspired our lives without us even really knowing it! Her presence in the entertainment industry has been so crucial and important for the representation of Women and the Latino community. Jennifer Lopez embraces a form of intersectional feminism that has not only inspired the team at Girl Blossom, but our friends, too. We hope that her feminism also inspires you too.
